Beyond the Brush: An Interview with Oksana Starling on Grit, Glow, and the Art of Instant Transformation

Oksana, your work is rooted in transformation—not just physical, but emotional. How would you describe what you really offer your clients?

I’m not just selling a look—I’m selling a feeling. Of course, makeup enhances your features, but what really matters is how a woman feels when she sees herself. Confident. Beautiful. Like herself again, but elevated. That emotional transformation is everything.

Many artists talk about mentors or pivotal advice early in their careers. Did you have anyone guiding you at the beginning?

Honestly, no. I did not receive any advice. I had to figure everything out on my own. That forced me to rely on radical self-belief. It sounds like such a cliché, but you have to believe in yourself. Every beginner artist starts with self-doubt—you doubt your talent, your ability, your capacity. But you have to move forward believing you do have talent.

What would you say to artists who are still struggling with that self-doubt?

Find mentors. Practice constantly. Self-belief doesn’t always come first—it often catches up after you’ve put in the work. But you have to keep going long enough to give it the chance to catch up.

The beauty industry can be physically and emotionally demanding. How do you handle burnout?

Yoga has always been my answer to anything and everything. Ninety minutes of practice, followed by ten minutes of Savasana—it resets everything. Your body, your mind, your soul. It gets you out of your head and brings you back into yourself. It’s my prescription for clarity.

If you had unlimited resources—say, a $1 million investment—what would you build?

My dream is to create a studio where everything is integrated—skincare treatments, professional makeup, and photography—all in one place. A seamless experience. Because I’m addicted to the transformation process.

What is it about transformation that fascinates you so much?

The instant gratification. The beauty of makeup is that the transformation is instant. You can take a woman, and in one hour she’s going to feel gorgeous, confident, like a million bucks. How amazing is that? It’s not just about appearance—it’s about how she carries herself afterward. I want people to see that transformation is accessible—that they deserve to feel beautiful and confident.

What keeps you grounded through it all?

Who said I’m grounded? I don’t claim to be grounded. I just believe in keeping it real.

Finally, what do you hope women take away after sitting in your chair?

I hope they remember who they are. Makeup doesn’t create confidence—it reveals it. Sometimes women just need a moment to see themselves clearly again. And when they do, everything changes.
