Can you start by telling us about what you do?

My business is somewhat unique in that not many people know what an Association Management Company (AMC) is or what we do. Our challenge is to get the word out and let people know what we do to support non-profits and how we can provide an alternative to hiring and managing full-time staff. We partner with executive directors and association leaders, providing exceptional teams and high-level customer service to help them realize their greatest potential.

What led you to your current profession?

My marketing background coupled with my experience managing non-profit organizations. I love having the ability to work for a for-profit company and all that entails but be able to help non-profits fulfill their purpose/mission. It’s a perfect balance for me.

What’s your favorite thing about what you do?

Being a part of the progress and growth for both Civica and our clients. It’s really exciting to be a part of a small but growing company and to participate on the leadership team that is getting us to the next level.

In the past, what have been your biggest obstacles in business? What’s your advice for people struggling with the same challenges?
Working with difficult people. You have to develop a high level of emotional intelligence. Stay calm, don’t be reactive, and empathize.

What is one piece of advice you’d give your pre-career 20 something self?

You don’t have to have all the answers, you just have to be able to find the solutions.

Do you have a favorite success quote?

“The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” – Eleanor Roosevelt

Are there any myths you’d like to bust about your profession?

I think executive directors of non-profits sometimes feel like they have to do it all. But, if they work with an AMC, they have staff focusing on the operational tasks while they can focus on the big picture, strategic items. We also have a very healthy hybrid model where we work with executive directors to make them shine and help them achieve their goals.

What have you learned about leadership that doesn’t get taught in schools?

Leadership is about people. As a leader, you have to set and achieve goals and get results, BUT, you also have to do that with people. Be authentic (and vulnerable) and create a safe environment for others to speak up, contribute and feel appreciated.
