One of my most asked questions about a branding session is “What should I bring?” My favorite thing to suggest is PROPS. But why props? Let’s dive into the “why.”
Whether we do so intentionally or not, we go into most moments in life with preconceived ideas of what we like and dislike. And props seem to be the latter.
I'm here to advocate for branding session props! Let’s talk about it!
Why Branding Session Props?
Props bring a lot to the table. They help tell the visual story of what you do!
Grabbing a viewer's attention through branding photos with props instantly translates who you are and what you do! And in today’s fast-paced digital world, you need to make an impact quickly!
It would only take one glance at a headshot where someone is holding a pot or pan to know that person is a chef or baker. Or, if you see someone in front of a podcast microphone or stethoscope, you know instantly who they are and who they help.
Don’t these mental images tell you what they do?
Branding Session Props are NOT Cheesy
Cliches bear a lot of truth, but a picture does speak a thousand words. And it's up to us to ensure that the picture tells our story and sells our brand!
I sometimes get pushback from clients when I mention bringing props to a branding session. Clients think props are cheesy or contrived, and they worry they’ll look like they’re trying too hard.
Here’s the thing - you’re never trying too hard for something you’re passionate about. Showing up for your business expresses your commitment to your services and clients.
People want to know that you take your business seriously. And props are all about conveying that message to your current and future clients.
Creating the know, like, trust factor with your audience is crucial in business. One of the fastest ways to do that is to show what it’s like working with you - using props in your branding photos.
Branding Session Prop Ideas!
Now that you’re convinced props are the way to go during a branding session, what should you use as your prop?
There are so many options depending on your brand voice and field. We already covered some (like pots and pans, microphones, and stethoscopes), and there isn't a limit to what you can use.
I’ve photographed clients with injection syringes, tarot cards, realty “sold” signs, etc.
Helping clients design their sessions is one of my favorite things to do. When planning props for your branding session, bring specific items to your niche.
If you’re a product-based brand, like skincare or a clothing boutique, product samples would be great props!
A coffee mug, laptop, and phone would be perfect for serviced-based brands. A clipboard and literature will be right on brand if you're an editor. How about a stand-up comedian with a handheld microphone? Or a plumber with their wrench, toolbelt, and other tools?
Props can also be sentimental pieces of jewelry. Wearing it can honor the giver, while holding a personal space within your photo.
You get the idea!
The main thing to keep in mind is to use props that will convey the message you want your clients to receive.
My motto is that you don't have to be a model to look like one. And I know that you look the most radiant when you are passionate about what you do!
So bring those props to your branding session!
Let’s show your audience exactly who you are, what you do, and how you can help them!
