What To Expect From Your Photoshoot Makeup Artist & How To Prepare
If you’re booked for a professional headshot session, you already understand the value of showing up as your best self. Whether you’re updating your LinkedIn profile, refreshing your website, or stepping into a new role, your image speaks volumes—and we want to help make sure it says exactly what you want it to.
Our studio specializes in working with professional women who want to look polished, confident, and camera-ready without looking overdone and fake. One of the key ways we make that happen is by offering professional hair and camera-ready makeup right here on site with licensed stylists who understand exactly how to get you photo-ready.
Here’s what you can expect, and how to prepare to make the most of your session.
Why Camera-Ready Makeup Is Different
Everyday makeup is designed for real life. Camera-ready makeup is designed for the lens. The camera’s lighting and high-resolution capture can wash you out or exaggerate uneven skin tones, which is why our in-house pros use special techniques and products to create a polished yet natural look that translates beautifully on screen.
Don’t worry—this doesn’t mean heavy, cakey makeup. Our artists specialize in enhancing your natural features in a way that feels authentic to you. Whether you want a soft, clean look for a corporate headshot or something with a bit more glam for a dating profile, we tailor the application to your goals.
What to Expect From Your Makeup Artist
Your stylist will begin by asking a few key questions:
- What kind of shoot are you doing?
- What’s your day-to-day makeup routine?
- What kind of look makes you feel most confident?
This helps her gauge your comfort level and desired look. If you’re someone who wears minimal or no makeup daily, she’ll keep it light and natural. If you’re used to a bolder brow or a signature red lip, she can work with that too.
Pro tip: If you have inspiration photos, bring them! A visual reference helps your stylist align with your expectations. Whether it’s a celebrity look you love or a past photo of yourself where you felt amazing, pictures go a long way in helping us understand your vibe.
Lashes Make a Difference
Lashes are a simple addition that make a big impact in photos. They help define your eyes and make them look bigger and more open under studio lights. Depending on your needs, the stylist may apply individual lashes or a light strip. The effect is subtle but powerful—and best of all, we take care of everything. No need to bring your own lashes or worry about the glue; we’ve got you covered.
Already wear lash extensions? No problem. You don’t need a fresh fill just for the shoot unless you’re due anyway. We’ll work with what you’ve got.
Bring Your Signature Lip, If You Have One
If there’s a particular lip color you love or wear often, bring it with you. Your stylist can use it directly or match it with a camera-friendly version. It’s a small touch that helps ensure you feel like you in your final photos.
Skin Prep Tips Before the Shoot
The best makeup starts with healthy, prepped skin. Here’s how to arrive:
- Come with clean, moisturized skin. No makeup, please.
- Optional but luxurious: If you want to go the extra mile, consider getting a dermaplane facial a day or two before your shoot. This gentle exfoliation removes dead skin cells and peach fuzz, creating a super smooth canvas for makeup. It’s not essential, but it can make a noticeable difference if you’re up for a little pampering.
- If you get Botox or fillers: Plan those appointments at least one to two weeks in advance. It takes time for the results to settle, and there’s always a small risk of bruising. Give yourself that buffer so you’re photo-perfect on shoot day.
Hair: How to Show Up Ready
Our stylist will be doing a dry styling session with hot tools (curling iron or flat iron) to create your final look. To get the best results:
- Arrive with clean, dry hair.
- Do your usual hair care routine the morning of the shoot. Use whatever products you normally apply when your hair is wet—no need to do anything special.
- The ideal base for most hair types: A smooth blowout. It gives volume at the roots and a sleek surface for curling or flat-ironing. If you can’t blow dry, just come with clean, air-dried hair, and we’ll take it from there.
Speak Up—This Is Your Look
Your confidence is our priority. If there’s anything about your hair or makeup that doesn’t feel quite right, say something. We want you to love how you look, because if you don’t feel great, it’ll show in your photos.
Fortunately, we only work with seasoned professionals who are happy to make any adjustments you need. You’re in expert hands, and we’re here to bring your vision to life.
Final Thoughts
Preparing for your headshot session is about more than showing up—it’s about showing up feeling confident and cared for. With the right prep and a little guidance from our stylists, you’ll not only look your best, but you’ll feel your best, and that’s what shines through in every photo.
We can’t wait to see you in the studio!
