What called you to your line of work?
I pursued a career in interior design because I have always been passionate about creating spaces that not only look beautiful but also function seamlessly to enhance people’s lives. There’s something incredibly satisfying about knowing that the work I do can positively impact someone’s daily life.
You decorated the White House. Tell us about that.
One of the most thrilling and humbling experiences in my career was being entrusted with the task of decorating the White House's West Wing for Christmas. It was an opportunity of immense honor and responsibility, one that I will forever hold dear. Collaborating with the White House team and witnessing firsthand the meticulous attention to detail that goes into every aspect of its decor was awe-inspiring. It was a journey filled with challenges, yet each obstacle served as an opportunity for growth and refinement. Seeing the final result and knowing that my contributions are now a part of White House history was immensely rewarding.
What does success mean to you?
For me, success is defined by the happiness and satisfaction of my clients. It’s not just about creating visually stunning spaces but also about ensuring that those spaces function to fulfill the needs, preferences, and lifestyles of the owner. Success means listening closely to my clients, understanding their vision, and translating that into a design that exceeds their expectations. Witnessing the delight on clients' faces as they immerse themselves in their newly transformed environment and hearing their feedback about how it enhances their daily lives is the ultimate validation of success for me. It's about crafting spaces that not only captivate with their beauty but also seamlessly integrate into and enhance the functionality of their lives. Success, in essence, is about contributing to my clients' overall happiness and well-being through my design work.
Name a professional challenge that keeps you up at night.
One of the greatest challenges I face as a self-employed creative is the uncertainty that comes with running my own business. The fear of not receiving calls or getting work weighs heavily on my mind. As someone who thrives on expressing my creativity, this fear is compounded by the need to balance the demands of entrepreneurship with the release of my artistic energy.
The prospect of silence, of clients not reaching out, is daunting. It reminds me of the delicate balance required between managing the practical aspects of my business and nurturing my creative spirit. Finding harmony between the two is crucial for both the success of my endeavors and my personal fulfillment as a creative professional.
What are the top three things (according to Jana) someone should consider before starting a business?
It takes a special kind of crazy to run a business successfully and you have to be able to embrace your inner Indiana Jones. The below three things I believe are crucial aspects of business success.
Drive & Focus:
Building a successful business requires unwavering drive and focus. It's essential to have a clear vision of your goals and the determination to pursue them relentlessly. This drive will fuel your passion, motivate you during challenging times, and keep you committed to your long-term objectives. Without a strong sense of purpose and dedication, it's easy to lose sight of your goals and become overwhelmed by the inevitable obstacles.
Organization:
Organizational skills are fundamental for effectively managing all aspects of a business. From finances and inventory to client communications and project management, staying organized is essential for maintaining efficiency and productivity. Establishing systems and processes early on can help streamline operations and prevent chaos as your business grows. Whether it's implementing digital tools for task management or creating a physical filing system, prioritizing organization from the outset will set a solid foundation for future success.
Troubleshooting & Flexibility:
In the unpredictable world of entrepreneurship, the ability to troubleshoot and adapt is invaluable. Expect challenges and setbacks along the way, and be prepared to navigate them with resilience and resourcefulness. Whether it's a logistical issue, a customer complaint, or a sudden change in the market, problem-solving creatively and decisively is essential for overcoming obstacles and sustaining momentum. Cultivating a mindset of agility and flexibility will not only help you weather the storms but also enable you to seize opportunities for growth and innovation.
What’s the first thing you do every morning to start your day off on the right foot?
Every morning, I kickstart my day with a ritual that sets the tone for what lies ahead: my morning coffee. It's not just about the caffeine boost; it's a cherished moment of quiet reflection and preparation. As I take that first sip, I take a mental inventory of the day ahead, mapping out priorities and tasks while enjoying a few moments of peace before the hustle and bustle begins. It's my personal recipe for starting the day on the right foot, ensuring that I approach whatever comes my way with clarity, focus, and a caffeinated smile.
