What do you do and why do you do it?

I lead Cobalt, an organization that protects access to abortion care and reproductive rights in Colorado. My work involves leading a team of policy experts, communications gurus, organizers, and activists. We connect with voters, stakeholders and elected officials, we communicate our values across multiple platforms, and we organize in the community all around Colorado. The work is always interesting and exciting.

If you have a bucket list, what’s your favorite thing you’ve checked off?

I created a vision board that included a trip to the Grand Canyon — and made it there this year!

What led you to your current profession?

I often say that if you asked me what I would be doing at this stage in my career, I would not have imagined I would be working to protect and expand access to reproductive rights and abortion. Think about it. Your decisions about your reproductive health care and if, when and how you choose to have children impact every area of your life. Being able to make decisions about your reproductive life is fundamental and something many of us take for granted. Too many people do not have the information they need, the access to care they want, and the freedom to make these decisions without outside pressure or influence. There are people who do not believe you should have this freedom or flexibility and that is why I head to work each day to protect that right.

What’s your superpower?

I am a connector – I love to connect big ideas, introduce people to each other, help people find jobs, new networks, or new contacts. I love making links between people and ideas.

What lessons did you learn from the challenges created by the pandemic?

Life is short – enjoy doing things you love. I have lots of hobbies and during the pandemic, I focused more time on crafting, sewing, gardening, cooking, and tried out new things. I expanded my garden and created a creative studio space. Lifting up that creative side gives you space for dreaming up big ideas. The creative work feeds my professional life and vice versa.

What have you learned about leadership that doesn’t get taught in schools?

Women leaders need to stick together and support each other. “Lift as we climb” matters more than ever. Women’s leadership in all walks of life is important to me. I have recruited women to run for elected office (and win!), and I encourage and support women in leadership on boards, commissions, and in the c-suite. Our unique voice and perspective are important and powerful. We get things done! Don’t underestimate your influence when you encourage others to lead and succeed.
